For the time being, Michael has left Dean’s body, and he’s not the kind of being that will “show up for dinner every Thursday night or anything like that,” Dabb admits.
TVLINE | The last episode ended with Michael rather unexpectedly leaving Dean, which led to a lot of speculation. Has Michael truly departed what is supposed to be his perfect vessel? And if so, why would he do that?
DABB: He has departed. The question of “why?” is one that will be explored. But he has definitely gotten out, and Dean is not secretly possessed. (x)
During Thursday’s Supernatural, the hunter started to experience odd, slightly fuzzy vision while talking to his friends and family.
[…] “It’s Michael-ish related,” executive producer Brad Buckner confirms of the twist. “That’s a big question mark leading into the midseason finale: ‘What is that? What’s going on with him?‘”
Buckner also notes that Michael is “out there with an agenda somewhere, and the question mark is, ‘Does he need permission to take Dean over again?‘”
Star Jensen Ackles, too, describes what’s happening to his character as a remnant of his possession. “There’s some leftover stuff going on with Dean that is from his time as Michael,” the actor shares. And as much as Dean would probably like to pretend that nothing is wrong, the problem “won’t fade away. It’s actually going to start to fester, and it’ll rear its pretty nasty head.” (x)
Hrm… I really feel that this isn’t actually a “quick question.”
I’m not sure this has anything to do with having a “mothering side” or not. And nobody can force you to care about a character you just don’t connect with. It happens. I mean, I don’t care a jot about Nick.
I’ve assumed since Jack was introduced and we learned that he’d be a regular character in s13 that even if I couldn’t muster up any care for Jack himself, that he’d be perfectly positioned as a mirror for Sam, Dean, and Cas. I had been prepared to at the very least observe Jack through that lens, even if I didn’t have any actual feelings for Jack. And that’s exactly how he’s been used as a character this entire time.
YOU don’t have to care about Jack. But it helps to understand why Sam, Dean, and Cas care about him, at least in an academic way, if you care about any or all of them. Because Jack’s story IS their story at its most basic level, and he’s a great big reflection of their own lives.
Only you can decide how you feel about this. If you can’t even see Jack as the character mirror for the other characters you DO care about, and you have convinced yourself that this will ruin the entire experience of Supernatural for you, it’s up to you alone to decide if it’s worth continuing to watch.
Hi there! I have another anon that is very similar to this that I haven’t gotten around to answering yet, so if that was also you, I apologize, because I did get your other message but haven’t had a chance to reply yet. If it wasn’t you, then I guess I should make time to answer because obviously this is a concern either way.
I don’t know if Jack would ask Cas to kill him. I mean, Jack expressed a desire to live whatever life he has left to the fullest, you know? I think he’s sincerely trying to do that, despite being ill. Maybe that will change after his failed grace treatment, but we just don’t know what the results of that will be yet.
Honestly I’ve been waiting for Jack to “die” since he was born, because everyone on Supernatural has to die at least once. I mean, the show lampshaded that way back in 9.04:
DOROTHY: Dream? Charlie, you died. Don’t worry about it, though. You’re not a real hunter until you’ve died and come back again.
So… he probably will die, but I don’t think it’ll be any more permanent than any other member of TFW…
We also have very little to go on regarding what the situation that will lead Cas to making this sacrifice, you know? What few spoilers we DO have could be pointing to several things.
This is why I never, EVER try to speculate off the episode summary blurbs.
Before we saw 14.07, for example, we didn’t have the context of Cas’s deal with Sergei. Sergei KNEW Cas might come, you know? He was ready, specifically FOR CAS. When he popped his head out after Cas was trapped in the holy fire, he greeted Cas by name. And then, almost in a mockery of Michael’s early season “What do you want” question, Sergei tells Cas that in exchange for the grace and the spell he wants the Winchesters to owe him one… and then even mentions how it was an “experiment,” reminding us of Michael’s experiments with the monsters. So was this all a setup for Cas, courtesy of Michael? We just don’t know.
Now with the previews for 14.08, we know there is Major Trouble in Heaven, and nothing more about what is actually going on there, or how it connects back up to Michael. But it does all seem to connect back to him.
But again, the whole “enormous sacrifice” thing was put there in the episode blurb, which are typically vague to outright deceptive in how they’re worded. Just look at the summary for 14.07:
CARPE DIEM – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Castiel (Misha Collins) track down a Shaman (guest star Dimitri Vantis), who may be able to help a friend. Nick (Mark Pellegrino) continues to spiral down a dark path as he looks for answers surrounding the deaths of his wife and son. Jack (Alexander Calvert) turns to Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help enjoying the human experience.
There was freaking out because of the hint about Jack wanting to go to Vegas, and the assumption that TFW would be separated for the entire episode again. Instead Jack and Dean kinda took an afternoon drive and then returned home. I mean, what happened in the episode was so far off what the wildest speculation was based off that summary, you know? So I really try to avoid using those summaries as if they meant something concrete.
Dean finds Cas exactly where he thought he’d be; sitting in his room, kneeling at his bedside, with a bowl and syringe on the mattress in front of him. His hands are shaking, and he curses at himself, hastily wiping at his eyes as he picks up the huge needle and puts it down again. Dean enters the room and sits down beside him, back up against the bed.
“You know it’s not gonna work.”
Cas grits his teeth. “I can’t just sit here and—”
“So you’ll what,” Dean sighs, eyes slipping shut in his exhaustion. “Maybe buy him a few minutes of peace and then be human forever?”
“Yes.”
“Fine.”
“Dean, I have to do some—what?”
Green eyes flick open, meeting blue in a defeated stare. “Fine,” Dean repeats. “Do I wish you’d keep your grace for the next time you decide to do something stupid? No question. But if you wanna sacrifice it all to save the kid… I can’t tell you no. You do what you gotta do, Cas.”
i just noticed that in the scene where cas is helping jack put on his trench coat, sam and dean are both holding jack’s shoes for him, and now i can’t focus anymore because it’s like all three dads are getting their kid ready for school
