i just rewatched 14×07 (i loved it so much!!) and i realized Cas asks Sergei what Michael had been going around asking people: “What is it that you want?” To which i think (i had a bit of trouble with his accent, though rewatching helped) Sergei replied “I don’t know. But tell the Winchesters they owe me”. Found that very interesting in regards to your post about how Sergei might be connected to Michael or at least how the phrasing throughout the convo was very deliberate to make us think of him

I also loved the episode, and I would have written about it more in the last couple of days but I’ve been busy, so thanks for the opportunity 🙂

There is a pattern of ‘want’ in the episode – in the first scene, Nick says to the priest’s corpse “It’s not like I want to do this, okay? I need to” (want vs need #7459437…) but eventually he comes to terms to the fact that he does, and tells Lucifer (also a dead figure, in parallel/contrast to the priest that had told him to pray…) “I lied. Truth is, I like doing these things, and I don’t want to stop […] I want it back (etc)”. Interestingly, it contrasts with Cain who said he couldn’t stop killing – the subtext says that Nick isn’t corrupted by a supernatural influence, like Cain was, but he’s simply a douchebag. Next step in terms of subtext is, Lucifer – for which Nick is a stand-in for, basically – is a duchebag, it’s not because he carried the Mark of the Darkness). The part where he’s like “no pain, no sorrow” also reminds of Dean’s bond to Amara and her ‘temptation’ – Nick says he’s bonded to Lucifer, and that he wants to stop feeling negative feelings. He even uses the term “darkness”, and I’m wondering if we’re going to get an arc about the Empty as a sort of equivalent of the Darkness in some way, as nothingness versus creation/life, and if Lucifer is going to be the narrative elements that connects the whole thing.

To get back to the ‘want’ theme – Jack needs to figure out what he wants to do with the little time he’s left: “before my life is over, I want to live it (etc)”, Dean asks him what he wants to do after the car drive, and eventually Dean regrets taking him outside but “it was what he wanted”.

And yes, there’s Cas who asks the question to Sergei, who says he doesn’t know (or does he?).

I don’t know if that’s a clue that Sergei is directly, in-plot connected to Michael, but this is definitely at least indirectly connected in terms of narrative themes. We’re smacked in the middle of the Ultimate Want Vs Need Theme, I think. The ‘need’ part – there’s multiple instances. They need a doctor, the lady needs information about the patient, Dean asks if they need to do it. Cas says that if Jack needs grace, he can have his; Rowena says he needs something stronger. Ketch says Sergei helped the BMoL when they needed to solve the unsolvable. Cas says he feels the need to do something in reference to going to Sergei…

I am here for this ride. I think that the Empty is going to be relevant, in some way, possibly in a way that resembles the Mark of Cain/Darkness arc, and I suspect that Nick and Lucifer aren’t just there because Ross-Leming likes them. Time will tell…

Title: Under The Midnight Sun

Author: Northern Sparrow

Artist: Delicious Irony

Rating: Explicit

Length: 224,527 words

Pairings: Dean/Castiel (minor Sam/Ruby)

Warnings: Canon-Typical Violence, Hypothermia

Summary: Dean Winchester’s been camp manager of a science research station on the Alaskan tundra for thirteen years. Dean likes his job; fixing the camp trucks, troubleshooting the snow machines, keeping clueless undergrads and NSF bigwigs from walking into grizzly bears or getting lost in snowstorms — it’s all in a day’s work. So it’s really not any of Dean’s business when some weirdo antisocial ornithologist sets up a tent a few miles away, a dark-haired blue-eyed guy who’s doing a “very long-term” study on birds or wings or something, and who never, ever takes off his big lumpy backpack. But then the new guy starts dropping by camp for coffee and… well, he’s not officially part of camp; he’s not Dean’s responsibility; he’s really not Dean’s problem at all, but when a blizzard comes rolling in, Dean gets worried and goes to check. Thing is, Dean’s spent years in the sweeping vistas of the Arctic. He knows all about the midnight sun and the northern lights, the ice caves and avalanches, the rough-and-ready Haul Road truckers and the even rougher-and-readier wild animals. But even so, what he finds is much more than he bargained for.

The bunker has felt busier off and on since the beginning of the season, as several refugees from the alternate universe have taken up residence in the Winchesters’ home. However, Sgriccia said that that number might decrease soon. “There’s still some [people] that will stick around a little. Everybody starts getting kind of assigned to different areas and they’re out in the field a lot more. Bobby is still around. Ketch comes back [for a visit].”

Favorite Destiel Fic: Self-Rec Edition

unforth-ninawaters:

Okay so I’ve been jonesing to launch the next Destiel Favs survey, and today I had an idea – add a question suggesting authors self-rec one work! Then I realized…that would ruin anonymity. So instead – are you a fic author? Submit a self-rec of one work, and I will use the results to create a new collection, one story per author, to help me promote a wider range of work out there!

(cause in the end, promoting more than the “usual” Destiel recs is why I do all these surveys…)

I’ll keep this open on a rolling basis. Please fill it out, and signal boost! Posts related to this will be tagged “destiel favs survey” (just like other Destiel favs related posts) and when I’ve created the new collection, I’ll post about it.

(I haven’t decided on a collection name yet; the existing collection is the “Destiel Fan Survey Favs Collection,” I’d like the new name to be obviously related but also clear that it’s self-rec. I’m open to suggestions…)
